Why won't your USB-C monitor run at full resolution?

You plug a monitor into your Mac over USB-C and it works — just not right. It's stuck at 4K@30 instead of 60, or it won't offer its native resolution, or a second display kills the refresh rate on the first. The picture is there, so the connection "works," which makes this maddening to diagnose. It's almost always a bandwidth problem, and here's where it comes from.
Video over USB-C runs on DisplayPort — and it shares the wires
A USB-C port carries video using DisplayPort Alt Mode. The connector has four high-speed lanes, and it uses them one of two ways:
- All 4 lanes for video — maximum display bandwidth, but no simultaneous SuperSpeed USB on that cable.
- 2 lanes for video + 2 for USB data — so a dock can run a display and fast USB at once, but the display gets half the bandwidth.
That split is the single most common reason a monitor won't hit full resolution: it's quietly running in 2-lane mode.
The bandwidth math, roughly
A 4K display at 60 Hz needs about 12–13 Gbps of usable video bandwidth.
- 2 lanes at HBR2 ≈ 8.6 Gbps usable → only enough for 4K@30. This is the classic "why is it 30 Hz" case.
- 2 lanes at HBR3 ≈ 13 Gbps → just enough for 4K@60.
- 4 lanes → comfortably 4K@60 and up, or dual displays.
Display Stream Compression (DSC) changes the math when everything in the chain supports it, but if any link doesn't, you fall back to the raw numbers above.
The four things that cap a USB-C display
- The cable. A USB 2.0 USB-C cable carries no video at all on its own — and a lower-tier cable may only support 2-lane DP Alt Mode. This is the most overlooked cause.
- The dock or hub. Many docks are wired for 2-lane mode so they can also give you USB ports, or split one video stream across two outputs (MST). That budget is fixed no matter how good your monitor is.
- The monitor's own input. Its USB-C port may be HBR2, or its firmware may default to a lower mode until you change a setting in its on-screen menu.
- The Mac. Base Apple-silicon chips support a limited number of external displays; beyond that, resolution or count gets cut.
Find the real cause on your Mac
Guessing which of the four it is — by swapping cables and docks — is slow. The link itself is the evidence. macOS negotiates a specific DisplayPort link, and you can read it.

The 30-second version
- A USB-C monitor stuck below native res/refresh is almost always a bandwidth limit.
- The usual culprit is 2-lane DisplayPort mode — often forced by the cable or the dock, not the monitor.
- USB 2.0 cables carry no video. Rule the cable out first.
