How to buy a USB-C cable that isn't lying about its specs

Search "USB-C cable" and you'll find $4 listings promising 240 W and 40 Gbps. Most of them can't do either. The specs are marketing text in a box, not a measured rating — and the connector looks identical whether the claim is true or not. Here's how to buy one that actually delivers, and how to confirm it once it's on your desk.
What the spec numbers should line up with
Before you buy, know what a real version of the cable you want looks like:
- Charging speed is set by amperage. A 3 A cable tops out near 60 W. 100 W needs 5 A; 140–240 W needs a 5 A EPR cable. A "240 W" cable that's actually 3 A is the most common lie.
- Data speed is a wiring tier: USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), 5/10/20 Gbps USB 3.2, or 40 Gbps USB4/Thunderbolt. A cable can't be both "for fast charging" and secretly USB 2.0 and still hit 40 Gbps — those are different wires.
- Video rides on data lanes. A cable that can't do high-speed data can't drive a high-res display either.
If a listing pairs a rock-bottom price with top-tier numbers for both power and data, treat it as fiction until proven otherwise.
Six things to check on the listing
- USB-IF certification. The USB Implementers Forum runs a certification program and a public registry. Certified cables say so and can be looked up. It's the strongest signal a listing isn't inventing its specs.
- A specific amperage (3 A or 5 A), not just a wattage. Vague "fast charge" with no amperage is a red flag.
- A named protocol — "USB4 40 Gbps" or "Thunderbolt 4," not just "high speed."
- Length that matches the claim. A cheap, long passive cable claiming 40 Gbps is suspect — that speed needs a short or active cable.
- A real brand with a real warranty. Anker, Belkin, Cable Matters, Apple, and similar publish honest ratings because they'd get returns otherwise.
- Reviews that mention measured results — people posting actual charge wattage or transfer speeds, not just "works great."
Verify it when it arrives — don't take its word
Certification and honest listings raise your odds; they don't guarantee the specific unit in the box. The only proof is what the cable reports to your Mac.
Every cable rated above USB 2.0 or above 3 A carries an e-marker declaring its true ratings.
