How to tell if a USB-C cable is Thunderbolt (on a Mac)

A Thunderbolt cable and a $4 charging cable have the exact same connector. Nothing on the outside tells you which one is in your hand — and plugging the wrong one into a Thunderbolt dock is the difference between a 40 Gbps link and a keyboard-speed one. Here's how to actually confirm whether a USB-C cable is Thunderbolt, on a Mac.
First, check the connector for the Thunderbolt logo
Thunderbolt cables are certified, and certified cables are marked. Look at the plastic of the plug for a small lightning-bolt icon, usually with a number next to it:
- ⚡3 — Thunderbolt 3, 40 Gbps
- ⚡4 — Thunderbolt 4, 40 Gbps, guaranteed to run docks and displays
- ⚡ with no number, or ⚡5 — newer Thunderbolt 5 (up to 120 Gbps)
No bolt at all doesn't automatically mean "not fast" — some USB4 cables also run at 40 Gbps and work in most of the same situations — but no bolt does mean the cable was never Thunderbolt-certified. And a huge share of unmarked USB-C cables are USB 2.0 charging cables that carry no high-speed data at all.
Confirm it on the Mac with System Information
The logo tells you what a cable claims. To see what it's actually doing, use the tool already built into macOS:
- Connect a Thunderbolt device (a dock, SSD, or display) through the cable.
- Hold Option and click the Apple menu → System Information.
- In the sidebar, open Thunderbolt/USB4.
If the cable and device are genuinely running Thunderbolt, the device appears here with its link speed. If the same device shows up under USB instead — or doesn't appear at all — the link fell back to plain USB, which usually means the cable (or a port or adapter in the chain) isn't Thunderbolt.
The catch: this only works if you have a Thunderbolt device to plug in. A bare cable tells System Information nothing on its own.
Passive, active, and cable length matter
"Thunderbolt cable" isn't one thing:
- Passive Thunderbolt 3 cables run 40 Gbps only up to about 0.8 m. Longer passive TB3 cables drop to 20 Gbps.
- Active and Thunderbolt 4 cables hold 40 Gbps up to 2 m because they have signal-conditioning chips inside.
So a real Thunderbolt cable can still underperform if it's a long passive one — which is exactly the kind of thing the logo won't tell you.
Read what the cable itself reports
Every Thunderbolt and fully-featured USB-C cable carries an e-marker — a tiny chip that declares its speed and power ratings to the Mac. That chip is the ground truth: it's what the cable says it is, regardless of what the listing claimed.
